Irish Citylink Marks Seven Years on Ballina - Galway Route and Confirms Continued Services Following Expressway Withdrawal

GALWAY, 30 March 2026 - Irish Citylink wishes to reassure passengers and communities that we will continue to operate our existing five daily services between Ballina and Galway, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for the towns and villages along this important corridor. This includes five departures Monday–Saturday and four on Sundays.

This week also marks a significant milestone for Irish Citylink, as Wednesday 1st April will see the 7-year anniversary of our Ballina - Galway service. Over the past seven years, this route has become an essential link for residents, students, workers and visitors across the region, and Citylink remains fully committed to supporting the communities we serve.

Consultation with the National Transport Authority

Irish Citylink will consult with the National Transport Authority (NTA) to assess whether additional capacity, increased frequency or further service enhancements are required in response to the withdrawal of Route 52 by Bus Éireann. We are working to ensure that residents, students, workers and visitors along the Ballina - Galway corridor retain reliable, convenient, and affordable public transport options.

Commitment to Rural Connectivity

Irish Citylink recognises the essential role that high quality coach services play in supporting communities:

  • Supporting rural connectivity, particularly for those who rely on public transport for access to employment, education and essential services.
  • Reducing private car dependency, helping to ease congestion in urban centres.
  • Ensuring rural towns and villages remain linked to major cities such as Galway, sustaining regional development and accessibility.

We fully understand how essential this route is for communities and those without access to private transport.

Affordable Fares

Citylink continues to deliver excellent value on its Ballina - Galway route, with competitively priced fares. The best fares can be found on the Irish Citylink website and app. This includes reduced fares for YAC card holders who book online. FTP card holders can travel for free on the service, with a fee of just €2 to reserve a seat.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Irish Citylink remains firmly committed to being a dependable transport partner for the west of Ireland. We will continue to monitor demand closely and remain ready to further enhance our services should the NTA identify additional public transport requirements along the corridor.
